Dr (Col) Rajinder Singh Guides Students on How To Overcome Exam Stress

Dr (Col) Rajinder Singh, former Senior Adviser (Psychiatry) and presently Director, Akal Drug De-Addiction Centres,  had an interactive session with the 11th and 12th class students of the Pathania Institute of Mathematics, Mohali last Sunday and shared valuable tips and techniques on how to overcome examination stress using specific exercises and methods.

Elaborating on the nature and types of stress, Dr (Col) Rajinder Singh pointed out to the students that mild to moderate stress during exams or athletic competitions can also enhance cognitive and physical functioning by optimising arousal levels.

On the occasion, Ms Simranjeet Kaur, a psychologist with the Kalgidhar Trust, demonstrated practical breathing exercises to help reset the stress response. Participants also practiced the 4-7-8 breathing method, which involves inhaling for 4 seconds, holding the breath for 7 seconds, and exhaling for 8 seconds. Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR), a mindfulness-based technique that helps individuals relax by directing attention to different parts of the body and consciously releasing muscle tension, was also demonstrated and practiced during the session. Strategies such as journaling and gratitude practice were also discussed. Although these techniques may appear simple, they can significantly enhance mental well-being, emotional balance, and overall quality of life. When practiced consistently, they can lead to meaningful and lasting positive change.

The event saw participation, besides students, of the parents and staff members of the institute. The questions of the students were also answered.

The participants applauded the valuable discourse and interaction of Dr (Col) Rajinder Singh on the important topic.
