Do you pick up non-agreeing patient from home?
No, Forcibly picking up an unwilling patient is illegal. However, we can help in enhancing his/her motivational level. Patient can be persuaded and coaxed to seek treatment, after effective counselling sessions.
How do the substances affect the patient emotionally?
The root cause of addiction is that the intake of these chemicals produce a feeling of euphoria and the abuser is inclined to repeat the experience. First the patient wants the substances to get pleasure and later he requires the same to stop pain.
Would not the patient after having been treated develop dependence on your medicines?
No. The medicines are prescribed by our doctors who specialize in addiction medicine. The patients are supposed to comply with prescribed dosages and instruction given. Each patient is supposed to follow up in the OPD on a regular basis. The prescribed medicine dispel dependence rather than to cause it.
Is it right to take Opium or Bhukki (Poppy husk) to cure and prevent diseases like brain stroke and blood sugar?
No, Opium and Bhukki are addictive substances. It is a misconception that they have any role in the prevention or treatment of any disease.
Why do addiction patients relapse despite treatment?
Drug addiction is as a chronic relapsing mental disorder. There are many reasons for restart of addictive substances. Most commonly it is the restart of smoked or non-smoked tobacco, social drinking, and interacting with old addict friends, urges to take the “stuff” just once, “sexual weakness”, body pains, inadequate sleep, and disturbed mood. In case of a relapse the family members of the patient must play a proactive role in helping him/her to report back to the addiction medicine experts and counselors before much time is lost.
Does quitting drugs weaken sex?
No. On the contrary quitting drugs will rather improve sexual life. If sexual problems occur, do not feel shy and always talk to your doctor and counsellor for help. Never indulge in self-medication or consult quacks or think of restarting drugs or alcohol.
Does one time or occasional use of the addictive drug and alcohol after De-addiction treatment cause no harm?
One time or occasional use of the addictive drug and alcohol after De-addiction treatment often derails treated patient’s efforts for achieving drug free life. Such indulgences often get repeated and ultimately lead to full blown relapse.
Should the treatment of those patients who continue to relapse despite several admissions in de-addiction centres be stopped?
No. Drug addiction is a chronic and relapsing disorder and thus treatment is mandatory to save the life of the patient.
Is Bhang consumption harmful?
Yes. Bhang contains a very potent chemical THC (tetrahydrocannabinols). Repeated exposure of brain to this chemical can cause mental disorder (psychosis). Bhang/ Cannabis is the most widely used substance in the world.
